Phone Scam

The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office has received several calls concerning a phone scam.   Citizens from Caldwell County have been contacted by an impersonator stating that they are from the Border Fines Department in Washington D.C.  These subjects are posing as Special Agents and stating that they have received packages from customs. They tell the victims that the packages have their names on it and they have found narcotics inside the package.  This person states that they will be arrested by the FBI if they do not pay a fine.  If the victim pays the fine, the charges will be dropped.  Detective Steven Raby of the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office has made contact with the DEA Office in Washington D.C. and they have informed him this is a scam.  Some of the phone numbers the scammers are using are (202) 230-6902, (202) 506-9798 and (804) 588-9566.

As a reminder you should never give your banking information, credit card information, social security number or any other sensitive personal information over the phone,” said Sheriff Alan Jones.  By sharing this information we hope we can prevent our citizens from becoming victims to these criminals.
