Sheriff's Office History
On Wednesday, June 9, 2010, Deputy
Todd Leger notified Major David Anderson that Ralph Kincaid, Legers uncle, had
allowed him to review an Estes family history book which possibly contained the photograph
of a former Sheriff of Caldwell County.
Major Anderson and Deputy Leger
reviewed the book and found that Kincaids great-grandfather was Madison Elijah
Estes, Sheriff of Caldwell County from 1902 until his death in 1903.
It was also discovered that the book
co-authored by Sheriff Estes daughter, Mary Estes Triplette, contains the photograph
of Marys husband Jerome Triplette. Triplette served as Sheriff of Caldwell County
from 1913 until 1922.
On Thursday, June 10, 2010, Ralph
Kincaid met with Deputy Leger, Major David Anderson and Sheriff Alan Jones at the
Sheriffs Office. Kincaid brought with him his grandfathers saddle bags, an
Estes family heirloom, which now belongs to Kincaids sister, Jean Ray.

Although worn, the saddle bags are
still in good condition and appeared to have once been used by the US Calvary. The saddle
bags are marked distinctly with the initials US on the front.
Mr. Kincaid is currently assisting
the Sheriffs Office by attempting to locate additional photographs of his
great-grandfather as well as Sheriff Triplette.
Major Anderson is currently working
on phase II of the Caldwell County Sheriffs History project which involves Sheriffs
of Caldwell County who served from 1894 until 1928.
Anyone who has information concerning
former Sheriffs of Caldwell County is asked to contact Major David Anderson at
828-759-1543 or by email at danderson@caldwellcountync.org.
