Nineteen years ago, on November 29, 1990, 29-year-old Mark Secreast and his wife Jeanie, 27, were shot to death at their home located at 2142 Wilkesboro Blvd. in Lenoir.   That double murder has remained unsolved until now.

Last night detectives of the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Department arrested William Eugene Murphy, age 50, of 3968 Hollywood Ridge Rd., Lenoir, and charged him with two counts of First Degree Murder in the deaths of the Secreasts.  He is being held here at the Caldwell County Detention Center under no bond, with a first court appearance scheduled for April 5, 2010.

"While I will not discuss the particular evidence that led to the arrest of Mr. Murphy, I will tell you that the evidence in this case includes scientific evidence that has been analyzed and corroborated by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation," said Sheriff Alan Jones. "My agency has been working on the Secreast murders for some time and we are pleased to be able to file charges in this heinous crime.  I would like to thank my detectives for their hard and diligent work on this case as well as the State Bureau of Investigation for their assistance in this matter. It is my hope that by this arrest, the Secreast family will have the answers to the questions they have carried for so many years and that they will finally be able to be at peace."
