Awards Ceremony

On August 31, 2009 Sheriff Alan Jones held an awards ceremony honoring a number of his deputies for acts of bravery during the Kings Creek Manhunt Operation of May 27-28, 2009.
On May 27, 2009 Deputy Marty Robbins was ambushed and severely wounded by assailant gunfire when he responded to a disturbance between neighbors on Grandin Road in the Kings Creek Community. Robbins was evacuated and flown to Carolinas Medical Center where he was treated for his injuries. Two civilians were severely wounded by gunfire from the same assailant and were trapped inside their home. Sergeant Tom McManus lead a team of deputies who attempted an evacuation of the wounded civilians. During the attempted evacuation Sergeant McManus was seriously wounded by assailant gunfire. McManus was evacuated and transported to Caldwell Memorial Hospital for treatment. Shortly thereafter a combined SWAT team with members from the Sheriffs Office and Lenoir Police Department arrived and conducted a successful evacuation of the wounded civilians. Sheriff Alan Jones presented awards to the following deputies.
