How to apply for a handgun permit

Handgun Permits: Only a County Sheriff is authorized under G.S. 14-402 to issue a permit to receive or purchase a handgun or crossbow when an application is submitted by a resident of his particular county. Prior to issuing a permit, the Sheriff must fully satisfy himself by affidavits, oral evidence or otherwise, that the applicant is of good moral character and that the person, firm, or corporation wants to possess the weapon for one of the following purposes.

  1. Protection of home, business, person, family, or property
  2. Target shooting
  3. Collection
  4. Hunting

The applicant need only come by the Sheriff’s Office, Monday thru Friday 8:30am to 4:30 pm. and complete an application. There is a 3 (Business) Day Waiting Period.  The cost is $5.00.  You must provide the following information:

How do I apply for a Concealed Handgun Permit?

In order to acquire such a permit, an individual must apply to the Sheriff’s Office in the county in which he resides. As a part of the application, the person must submit several items.

The paperwork process is lengthy, so applicants are requested to please make an appointment to apply for a Concealed Handgun Permit.  Appointments can be made by calling 828-754-1518.

The Sheriff has 90 days from the time all of the application materials are received to either issue or deny a permit. In order for the applicant to be approved, he must:

  1. Be a citizen of the United States;
  2. Have been a resident of the state for no less than 30 days immediately preceding the filing of the application;
  3. Be at least 21 years of age;
  4. Not suffer from any physical or mental infirmity that prevents the safe handling of a handgun; 
  5. Have successfully completed an approved firearms training course;
  6. Provide a copy of a valid North Carolina Issued Identification or North Carolina Driver's License.

 

Can I speak directly to the Sheriff?

Yes, The Sheriff’s Office is always open for you to come in and speak with him.

Because of his commitment to Caldwell County, he may not always be in the office so it is best to call for an appointment. If you call by phone and he is not in the office, you can leave your telephone number, and he will return your call.

What are the hours of operation for the Sheriff's Office?

There is someone available 24 hours per day at the Sheriffs office; however, specific divisions have their own hours.

Administration: Monday thru Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.  Phone 828-754-1518

Civil Division: Monday thru Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.  Phone 828-754-0576

Detective Division: Monday thru Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm  Phone 828-759-1554
