Court Officers and Procedures

Sgt. Jerry Simmons

The Court Division is comprised of 8 sworn Deputy Sheriff's that are assigned specifically to the Caldwell County Court House.  This division is one of two divisions that are mandated by the NC General Statues that the Sheriff of the County be in control of.  Sgt. Jerry Simmons is responsible for the officer's that are assigned to the Caldwell County Courthouse.  Sgt. Simmons reports to Captain Pyle of the Detention Center.

Court Officers, a.k.a. Bailiffs, are responsible for the everyday security of Caldwell County Courts.  They conduct inspections daily of the courthouse for weapons, drugs, and other illegal contraband.  They maintain a calm environment inside the courtrooms to ensure that the duties of others are able to be carried out efficiently.

Recently, by order of the Courthouse Security Committee, some exterior doors to the courthouse remain locked for increased security to the building and its occupants.  This allows for most people to come in the same door, to allow for better monitoring for weapons and/or explosive devices.

Court Officers do not allow PAGERS or CELL PHONES to operate inside a courtroom, and will seize these items if they disrupt the court process.

Also proper court room attire, includes business suits, long pants, shirts with a collar, and other casual dress.  It does not include, SHORTS, TANK TOPS, HALTER TOPS, OR CLOTHING THAT SHOWS THE MIDRIFF AREA.  A Judge could order you leave the courtroom and return in proper attire at his or her discretion.

Remember, a court of law is not the ideal place for your children.  If you must bring them to court, please keep them as quiet as possible and sit to the rear of the courtroom to allow yourself an easier means of leaving while causing the least amount of disruption.
