Criminal Investigations Division (CID)
The Criminal Investigations Division (CID) of the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office is composed of a Captain, a Lieutenant, a Sergeant, six (6) general case investigators (detectives), three (3) narcotics agents, and an investigative secretary. Our established working hours are Monday thru Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. However, to be successful in solving cases, these hours are just “guidelines”. Many investigators will be in early and leave late into the evening hours. They will also come in on weekends. Our narcotics officers will work very long days and usually at least one of the weekend days/nights. There is an investigator on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year who can be called out on a moments noticed by the Patrol Shift Lieutenant. We are responsible for responding to all high profile crimes, such as a homicide, sexual assault or assaults inflicting serious injury. It is our responsibility to process crimes scenes, collect any perspective evidence, in order to identify the perpetrator and convict in a court of law. We review every report that is taken by patrol and make a determination if there are enough solvability factors to initiate an active investigation. Every felony that is reported will, at a minimum, be assigned to an investigator to speak with the complainant. Our division is responsible for the Evidence Room. Our Evidence Custodian must ensure that every item of evidence is carefully documented and that the chain of custody is not broken before it is stored in the evidence room. There is only one individual who has access to this room and that is the Evidence Custodian. He has one of the most important jobs with the agency and must be of the highest integrity. We work many special assignments for the Sheriff, to include background investigations on potential employees and internal investigations. We work very close with the surrounding agencies in Caldwell County, Catawba County, Wilkes, Alexander and Burke County. We also work with Social Services. Several of our investigators are members of boards throughout the region, to include, but not limited to: Child Fatality Prevention, NCCIX (North Carolina Criminal Information Exchange), Healthy Caldwellians, Caldwell Friends, Communities in School, JCPC (Juvenile Council for Prevention of Crime), Child Advocacy and Child Sexual Abuse Protocol.
